Mo ghrá thúAs some of you know, or really don't, yesterday was our schools day of silence. And for our school, it was really well supported- a lot of the students supported the cause (seemingly, if not the rainbow bandanna's), and at the assembly at the end of the day, the GSA got a lot of support, from the teachers
and most of the students.
For those of you who don't know what the day of silence entails, I'll type out a small bit from the silent perspective, which I carried around for most of yesterday;
'
Please understand my reasons for not speaking today. I am participating in a national youth movement protesting the silence faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and their allies in schools. My deliberate silence echoes their silence, which is caused by harassment, prejudice, and discrimination. I believe that ending the silence is the first step towards fighting these injustices. Think about the voices you are not hearing today. What are you going to do to end these silences?'
However, the day of silence doesn't just curtail homophobia, but most racism also. In my town, or rather, as our awesome English teacher (He's not racist, its a really big joke, because its true. He actually helped host this)calls it; White bread and mayonnaiseville, racism and homophobia are both becoming issues. A couple months back, some local teens decided to spray paint some racial hate words all over our school. One of my friends almost got into a fight with a couple guys for having a mohawk. One of my oldest friends got picked on for being who she was at her old school. Another gets talked about because of her sexuality. And in our small town.. they shouldn't be issues. A persons sexuality, skin color, hairstyle, or personality shouldn't define who they are.
I myself am not totally straight. To me, gender doesn't matter, and shouldn't matter. To me, its part of 'who the person is on the outside doesn't compare with who they are on the inside' package. And you know, after this, I want to join the GSA next year, and do my part, oddly as it sounds (generally school related activities aren't my thing).
In other REALLY big news.
If any of you Californians watched the news yesterday, or even Americans for that matter, you'll know what I'm on about.
California officially became the second state, since Massachusetts in 2004 to allow same-sex couples to get married. The
second, in but a couple years. Woo. Getting there, but its still really horrific, some of the things that happen.
Although this is a victory in gay rights, there are still people with the opinions such as;
"Were obviously very disappointed in the decision. The remedy is a constitutional amendment. The constitution defines marriage as a union between one man and one woman," said Glen Lavy, senior counsel for the organisation. Of course there will always be people who speak out against issues, its natural, and everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but shouldn't the Government and its Charters, Policies or Constitutions grow and mature as the people of its country do?

What a stupid lamb.
What a sick, masochistic lion.
